Prestigious Platform Lift for Historic Venue

A Prestige platform lift from movemanSKG provides an access route for wheelchair users at Dundas Castle in Scotland. Specially built to fit in an existing shaft, it replaces a water-powered lift and travels nearly six metres between three floors. Dundas Castle, located near South Queensferry to the west of Edinburgh, has a long, rich heritage.

Members of the Dundas family originally built Dundas Castle in 1416 to serve as a home in times of peace, and a fortress in times of war. Indeed, Oliver Cromwell stayed there a number of times around the time of the Battle of Dunbar in 1650. The estate passed through generations over many years. The Dundas family eventually sold the castle in 1846.

During World War Two, British military forces used the castle to protect the nearby Forth Bridge, which was of significant strategic importance. In 1995, Sir Jack Stewart-Clark inherited the estate and set about restoring it to its former glory. He rebuilt all the stonework, and installed electricity, toilets, and banqueting facilities. His wife, a talented interior decorator, completely refurbished the interior.

Secluded in the peaceful countryside of its own 1000 acre estate, Dundas Castle is now an officially recognised five star venue, available for exclusive hire. It is ideal for corporate events, weddings, golfing holidays, group holidays and private dinner parties. Disabled access is a priority at Dundas Castle.

movemanSKG’s three stop Prestige platform lift allows wheelchair users to access the building’s upper floors. Its customised platform means it fits within the confines of the existing lift shaft.

Douglas Young, Internal Maintenance Manager at Dundas Castle, is positive; "Thanks to movemanSKG, we continue to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Our platform lift allows less able employees and visitors to move independently around the building, and performs reliably despite rigorous use. It has fire rated doors, which resist intense heat for up to one hour and meet building regulations."

Dundas Castle’s Prestige features controlled acceleration and deceleration, which eliminate uncomfortable jolting. It has tactile, illuminated control buttons, self closing doors, and position indicators on each landing. The lift has a range of safety features, including interlocking doors that prevent people entering the shaft while the platform is in motion, and a hand winding system in case of power failure.

movemanSKG’s Prestige lifts 400kg up to nine metres. It comes in a range of colours, materials and finishes, which make it suitable for any environment. Users benefit from three inclusive service visits in the first year of ownership.
