What is reasonable?
Article previously featured in Stepping Out 1 - January 2000
The word "reasonable" appears throughout the Disability Discrimination Act and the accompanying Code of Practice. However, the Act itself does not provide a definition of exactly what "reasonable" means. This newsletter is intended to illustrate the various "reasonable adjustments" made by others to the physical features of their premises, in order to fulfil the requirements of the DDA. No two buildings present the same problems, and therefore they cannot lend themselves to the same solutions. Precedents will be set and will act as a benchmark for others to follow. Perceptions of exactly "what is reasonable" will change continually as more and more platform lifts are installed. One of the main aims of this newsletter is to increase awareness of the way that platform lifts are being used, and the precedents being set. |
